In model engineering O-Rings are commonly used. Depending on the elastomer that is used for the O-Ring, it will usually have a good to great resistance to oils and other lubricants.
They will be able to make a perfect seal in valve housings and pistons, as well as the piston and valve rod glands.
More traditional model engineering methods will not use O-Rings and this will come with a few problems, one being the metal on metal contact leading to the wear of the metals and then the damaging of the model itself. O-Rings will be used to prevent this metal on metal wearing, and by doing so extend the life of the model application. Once the O-Ring has been used significantly and needs replacing, they are very easily changed so there wont be a lot of downtime.
