For the pharmaceutical industry, the materials that are used must have a range of properties such as, abrasion and heat temperature resistance, the ability to withstand intense cleaning cycles, chemical compatibility and be highly robust.

During the process of producing medication, seals will undergo being exposed to toxic substances and chemicals as well as high temperatures and pressures. They can also be exposed to very low temperatures as it is cooling, because of this the seal in use must have a good temperature range.

As the environment around the production of pharmaceutical products can vary, if its high or low temperature or if its the pressure that the seal is under, different materials will be used to suit the environment. Commonly used materials are Viton (FKM), Nitrile (NBR), EPDM, FFKM, PTFE and Silicone.

Viton (FKM) - Like most materials Viton can come in different compounds, with each compound having different properties and uses. FKM GLT, for example, has a temperature range of -40°C to + 250°C. This range will allow it to be used in the most demanding of environments.

Nitrile (NBR) - Nitrile (NBR) and Hydrogenated Nitrile (HNBR) are materials that are praised for their great low temperature flexibility and low abrasion rating. Because of their great characteristics they are a good fit for applications that involve a high energy input into the seal.

EPDM - EPDM is available in both black EPDM and white EPDM. The white EPDM is often used in hygienic processes such as food production. EPDM also has excellent water resistance which is why it is a very commonly used material for sealing.

FFKM - Because of their excellent resistances to temperatures and unique media, FFKM, or Perfluoroelastomers, is used in some of the more challenging operating conditions. This is why they are often used in the Chemical and Pharmaceutical industry. Similarly to EPDM, FFKM can also come in a white compound which allows it to be used in more hygienic processes.

PTFE - Of all the materials used when making O-Rings PTFE is the most chemically inert, this means that any seal made from PTFE will not be chemically reactive. PTFE also possesses an incredible heat temperature range, tear resistance and abrasive resistance. This is what gives PTFE its slippery surface that makes it the ideal material to be used in a dynamic application.

Silicone - Silicone is used in a lot of medical and food related applications, this is because of the cleanliness of silicone compounds as well as its retention rate at high temperatures compared to other elastomers. Silicone is best used in static applications as it does not have the best tear resistance, abrasion resistance and tensile strength.
